The world of memes and mass media is a very odd one, because in the end, you just don’t know what person or incident are going to have real staying power. Very often things come sailing in from left field that no one could have possibly thought about beforehand. Case on point: Haliey Welch, a.k.a. the “Hawk Tuah” girl, who has somehow managed to parley her 15 minutes of fame into seven months of semi-stardom. When, back in last July, she graced the world with her down-Southern advice for pleasing her man, I can pretty much guarantee that NOBODY had as much as a smidgen of a notion that she would soon be permeating the Internet the way that she has.

What can I say? Haliey’s been able to achieve the kind of continuous exposure that has far outlasted anyone and everyone’s predictions. Even her recent crypto-currency kerfuffle hasn’t forced her out of public discourse. It’s been more than half a year now, and if she plays her cards right and cooperates with the investigation, she just might be able to keep her thing going…which would make me a very happy guy…but perhaps not for the reasons you might think.

You see, back in July of last year, mere weeks after she accidentally launched herself into the public eye, she and her new management team made their way down to the Sirius XM studios here in L.A. to do a podcast interview. Guess who was assigned the photograph the occasion? Yep, none other than yours truly. We knocked the shoot out in short order, and I dutifully posted the photos on Getty Images’ web site. Well, little did I know that this shoot would end up being the last professionally done one she would do; her management ran the curtain down on that, leaving my shots the only pro-shot “generic” ones available on the market.

And her pics started selling. And selling. And selling, over and over again. She just wouldn’t go away, and my monthly sales statements of her shots began going through the roof. I know for a fact that by the end of the year, they had generated thousands of dollars of sales for Getty—and by extension, me. And her popularity isn’t just a stateside thing, either: she’s gone global, and the international sales of my images of her has been a higher percentage than I anticipated.

This should give you some idea of how far out her reach is now. The following is a pair of lists of all the media outlets that paid for the usage of my pics in the month of December. Bear in mind that this was month #6 of Haliey’s run in the spotlight, and right in the middle of the crypto blow-up. You would think that her star would be waning about now…and you’d be wrong. There were more individual sales in December than in the previous two months combined. Here are the people responsible for that:
