Book Title Ideas
Wow, another post so soon after my giant EDC monologue! Sit down, relax...I actually have a genuine dilemma here that I would appreciate some help with. Let me explain...
You see, a couple of years ago I started up this insane photo book project about my experiences in the rave scene in the 1990s. Well, two years, several hundred drafts (no, really!) and a ridiculous amount of photo editing later, I'm approaching the end of the writing...but there's a problem. What is it, you ask? Well, I'll explain...I'M STUCK FOR A F*CKING TITLE. I genuinely thought I had a workable one, but after a certain amount of soul-searching, I decided that the title I'd come up with was...how do I put this delicately...a bunch of pretentious crap. This, dear reader, is where you come in. You see, I've spent much of the last 48 hours throwing around just about every dance music-oriented title I could think of...and I'm getting an enormous migraine as a reward. So, after narrowing down a huge list down to a somewhat less huge one, I'm going to put the remaining candidates here on this blog for anyone to comment on. And believe me, any comments, both favorable and derogatory, will be appreciated. Now remember, this is a book about the Southern California rave scene, and how incredibly awesome it was...and yes, it was for the most part incredibly awesome. So with that in mind, here is the list:
Forbidden Rhythms
Stark Raving Mad
Beautiful Chaos
Joy On The Dance Floor
Heaven On The Dance Floor
Rhythm Of The Night
Dance The Night Away
Land Of The Free, Home Of The Rave
Rave On
MASSIVE
Burning Down The House
Something Wonderful
Tonight's Gonna Be A Good Night
Groove Explosion
Look For Me On The Dance Floor
God Is A DJ
Glowsticks & Glory
Turntable Revolution
California Raving
As I said above, please feel free to comment on these candidates. If you have any ideas of your own, please feel free to offer them. Yes, I'm serious...thanks. Looking forward to reading what you have to say.

Ditch all the long titles as being too difficult to typeset on a cover, even if it is coffee-table sized. (Is it?)
ReplyDeleteI like the title "Rave On" the most, but I suspect it has probably already been used. And the "O" in "on" could be a camera lens.
Or plan ahead and call it RAVE ON LA, and then you could do RAVE ON SF or wherever next. Or "RAVE ON: LOS ANGELES 2006-2010" (subtitle so that you can release another one in a few years if this one sells well.)
ReplyDeleteI think "Rave" is an important keyword to include.
Wait wait, got it:
ReplyDeleteLENS ON THE DANCE FLOOR
And then have readers wonder when the character of Len will be introduced.
hi micahel
ReplyDelete- liking the play on dreaming with
'California Raving' the best from your list -
thinking the title should have a reference to the time period you captured or as your mate said a subtitle - - perhaps a twist with a photo reference with 'Stock Raving Mad' or
Happy Daze: California Raving 1990s etc...
Southern Bells and Whistles! ;-)
perhaps you can upload a few pages examples - are they all nighttime photos?
good luck !
"Rave in the Sun" is something I thought of. Definitely include "Rave" and I like the sun since sunny SoCal is what it's all about- I agree with Will. Simple, no big words, and not try to play on any songs or artists. Cool!
ReplyDeleteIs the book going to be about the rave seen in So. Cal or in Los Angeles? If it's about L.A. I was thinking something along the lines of, "Raving With The Angels" Also, I was wondering if you ever went to Seoul, Korea with Mark Lewis? Am really interested in hearing about your book as well as the photography scene in Los Angeles. I grew up there, but moved out of the country almost 15 years ago. I have recently been thinking about moving back. Would love to pick your brain. I'm a photographer as well. Shot the electonic music scene as it grew in Korea, but have since moved on to fashion and commercial stuff. Let me know if it was you in Seoul. Jonnysako@yahoo.com or Jonathan Fishstein (on Facebook)
ReplyDeleteI like Stark Raving Mad......even though, just "RAVE" would be good too(:
