DJ MAG "Stayin' In" re-post #6: REPO MAN
It’s remarkable that even after thirty years, “Repo Man”
still remains at or near the top of American punk rock movies. Helmed by “Sid
& Nancy” director Alex Cox, the film stars a babyfaced Emilio Estevez as
the white suburban punk Otto, who learns the ups and downs of becoming a legal
car thief from the perpetually wired Bud, played by Harry Dean Stanton at the
top of his game. Longtime character actor Tracey Walter also shines as Miller,
the repo yard sage with an insanely burned out mind. “Repo Man” captures the
early 1980s punk atmosphere like no other Hollywood release, while threading in
an often hilarious plotline concerning dead aliens being smuggled in the trunk
of an old Chevy Malibu, which becomes the ultimate repo car. With a stellar
soundtrack featuring Iggy Pop, Steve Jones, Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies,
the Circle Jerks and Fear, the film remains a crucial artifact in the history
of punk on film, and a big middle finger to those who still think Green Day are
hardcore.
